HIV/AIDS Fight: World Rates Akpabio High

By Ogechukwu Nzekwe

The World Bank has rated Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State high in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the state. While commending Akwa Ibom State Action committee on AIDs (AKSACA) Mr. John Elder, World Bank task team leader for Nigeria, described Akwa Ibom State as one of the best performing action committees accredited by the World Bank in 34 states of Nigeria. Elder, who had earlier led a team of World Bank consultants to Akwa Ibom for a broad check of the HIV/AIDS programme, credited the achievements of the state committee to Akpabio support for the programme. He also praised the governor for his continued close collaboration with SACA to meet the requirements of the national executive council to transform the SACA to agency status.
Elder Advocated the dedication of at least one percent on budgetary allocation in key ministries such as health, education, women affairs and youth and the local government councils to HIV/AIDs activities.
